Cultural Immersion

We don't run "touristy" tours with minimal cultural immersion. Instead, our students fall in love with our island as we show them the real Puerto Rico from within (no Hard Rock Cafe, please!). Plus, they step out of their comfort zone to meet some "puertorriqueños" "en español."

  • EATING like a local (“Pinchos y piraguas, por favor!”)
  • DANCING at a folkloric Puerto Rican dance show and workshop:
    • from “Bomba y Plena” to “Reggaetón

  • HELPING local public school students and teachers by participating in community service projects such as teaching English and assistant teaching.
  • COOKING demonstration & class led by professional local chefs in fancy Old San Juan
  • ORDERING “cubanos” and “cafecitos” at local panaderías
  • STOPPING for “Guarapo" (freshly-made sugar cane juice)if we see "Sr. Efendi" selling it off the side of the road. We'll also pull over to ask how he makes it, and of course we'll try some.
  • SCAVENGER DIGITAL HUNTING at a super authentic farmers' market - "en español"
  • ENJOYING interactive “Salsa” lessons at an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant and salsa club.
  • PLAYING dominoes & “briscas”
  • DINING and conversing with locals and guides
  • SWIMMING and LODGING where locals swim and stay
  • BECOMING a “savvy traveler” through Vámonos Tours’ pre-trip culture and language training
  • STROLLING the cobblestone streets and taking in the lore of Old San Juan
  • TOURING Puerto Rico’s forts and historic landmarks
  • TASTING tropical fruits off the road when available

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime." - Mark Twain -
