Spanish Immersion - Not just ordering meals

Spanish is real; it’s not just a subject. It is only by using Spanish that students access the real Puerto Rico. The more opportunities students have to speak Spanish, the greater the impact of their travels.

Our Immersion Approach - We are committed to helping students put their language skills into real communicative action. We create true speaking opportunities and fun incentives to allow the maximum use of Spanish on tour. These opportunities start before students arrive in Puerto Rico.

  • Spanish Pledge - Our travelers sign a Spanish Pledge, promising to make the most of their adventure by leaning away from their comfort zone and using Spanish with our guides, bus driver, and the general public as much as possible.

  • Pre-Trip Training - Prior to our tour, teachers receive cultural tips and vocabulary sheets to prepare students for their encounters. Students learn words like "boricua” and “pinchos,” as well as Puerto Rican idiomatic and facial expressions. We also provide teachers with different cultural and linguistic practice scenarios similar to what the students experience in Puerto Rico.

As teachers, we know how to constantly work these words into our travels throughout the island. And, through “rifas” (raffles) and our "Reward Coupons," we compensate students for using them.

  • Incentive "CUPONES” - We reward students with coupons for impressing their tour guides and/or teachers by::
    • Using new Spanish words or expressions in context
    • Involving themselves in Spanish conversations
    • Answering questions (for example, during our “bus talks”) about the things we’ve seen and learned.
They can use these coupons toward the purchase of "piraguas," "batidas" and/or virgin "Piña Coladas".
  • "Inglés?" - We avoid English as much as possible on tour! We eat, stay, and swim in places that tend to be frequented by locals rather than tourists, so students will be spoken to in (and have to speak) Spanish. All of the staff working at the places we visit agree to speak to us in Spanish.
  • "Rifas" - We hold fun and challenging “rifas" (raffles) throughout the trip where students answer questions about the words and cultural information that they have learned. (i.e. ¿Qué monstruo famoso nació y vive en el Yunque?)
