Puerto Rico Earthquake Update #2

Thank you so much for the many emails, calls, prayers, and gestures of care towards our island and staff. We are overwhelmed by your support for our island and interest in the wellbeing of our people and staff. Thankfully, our entire staff, hotel and bus partners, vendors, and groups on the island are all safe and in good shape.

Following this morning’s earthquakes in southern Puerto Rico, we have learned of an island-wide power outage and damage caused by the earthquake to homes, churches, and structures in this part of the island. We are also aware of one reported fatality. Even though the damage is mostly in this region, Governor Vázquez has declared a state of emergency throughout the Island as reports of damage continue to emerge.

We are in close and direct contact with Discover Puerto Rico (DPR), the island’s DMO. As stated in their last update, DPR “is in contact with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company to learn more about potential impact to tourism following recent earthquakes. Many establishments have lost power but are prepared and are running on generators. Of note, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, the San Juan Cruise Port, the Ponce Cruise Port and Airport, the Puerto Rico Convention Center, and attractions and hotels in northern Puerto Rico, including areas around San Juan, are open. For those traveling to and from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, plan for additional time.

The U.S. Geological Service has advised that there is no tsunami threat to the Island at this time. For the latest information and travel updates, visit https://www.discoverpuertorico.com/.”

Vamonos and Discover Puerto Rico have a robust crisis communication plan in place to ensure we are able to quickly respond appropriately in an emergency situation. Our main concern is ensuring the safety of our travelers and staff. We are monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates in the hours and days to come.

Once again, thank you for your support and care. Visitors can be reassured that authorities are doing everything possible to ensure safety and minimize disruption to travel plans in the region.
